Safe use training – a key requirement for Bayer CropScience
Bayer CropScience has defined 12 stewardship principles covering the whole life-cycle of a product from its invention, research and development to its ultimate use and beyond. Following and applying these principles secure the safer and responsible use of our products.
Training of safe and responsible use of our products is a key requirement for Bayer CropScience to fulfill our commitment to encourage sustainable product use. As formulated in the FAO Code of Conduct Article 5 training and educational programs have an umbrella function covering most of our stewardship principles. These programs are crucial to ensure that stewardship as a guiding principle in all our actions is fully understood, accepted and implemented at all steps of the life-cycle of our products.
Bayer CropScience looks back on many years of experience in initiating and conducting appropriate programs tailor-made to the needs of our customers in the different countries in order to train, instruct and, as necessary, update them in all aspects of the safe and responsible use of our products.
Implementation of appropriate educational measures are achieved through own activities and/or industry associations and through collaboration with various stakeholders, including governments and science based institutions.
In these trainings emphasis is put on advice and practices how to avoid risks associated with improper use of Bayer CropScience products and how to minimize adverse effects on humans, the environment (water, soil, air) and on non-target organisms. Where relevant, training includes resistance management strategies in the framework of Good Agricultural Practice and Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
To further enlarge the spreading of our stewardship principles, personal safety precautions for the safe handling and application of Bayer CropScience products are actively promoted by our field staff.
To bear fruit the basic elements of successful stewardship training must include:
When and how to control insects, plant diseases and weeds:
Safe use training has been undertaken by Bayer CropScience for many years in nearly all countries around the globe, the majority of them Third World countries.
By the end of the training all participants should understand how to avoid misuse of plant protection products, their correct and judicious application, they know how to protect themselves and the environment by using safety kits (personal protection equipment) and state of the art application tools and techniques and they esteem the importance and necessity of Integrated Pest Management. Successful training also means that the key messages and lessons learnt will be widely conveyed within the rural community and stakeholder groups.
In strengthening its stewardship efforts Bayer CropScience plans to further extend its training programs in the years to come.
