Bayer CropScience ensures that sustainability is an integral part of its business strategies right across the value chain - in order to create value through innovation for customers, the company and our employees across the world. |
Crop protection – indispensable for global agriculture
The challenge of the 21st century is to feed a constantly growing world population as resources (including land, water and energy) diminish, without negatively impacting on climate change and species diversity. We believe that agriculture based on the principles of sustainable development – sustainable agriculture – is the only way to overcome this challenge.
Bayer CropScience has undertaken to make as substantial a contribution as possible to sustainable development. We want our research and development activities to provide innovative technologies and products to solve farmers' problems. These technologies need to enable an integrated approach to be taken for conventional and organic farming systems, and they must support the coexistence of these systems. We want our products and services to contribute to preserving agricultural yields in order to meet the growing worldwide demand for food.
For this reason Bayer CropScience continually incorporates the principles of sustainability into its business strategies. This applies to all parts of the company, from research and product development, through formulation, manufacture and packaging to distribution and sales. Our research and development activities, for example, focus on the discovery of efficient, yield-enhancing products which have as little environmental impact as possible. In our manufacturing operations, priority is given to processes which save energy and water. The recommendations we give farmers for using our products incorporate principles of good agricultural practice. New technologies such as seed dressings have enabled us to greatly reduce the number of leaf treatments required, which has helped to reduce the amount of water and energy expended on protecting crops.
Partnerships with various stakeholders illustrate a further basic principle of sustainable development. These partnerships include initiatives to improve living conditions, especially in rural areas, the provision of education and training to ensure that crop protection products are used safely, and cooperation with partners working in the food chain with the aim of improving the provision of healthy food.
